We purchase fine examples from a variety of sources, including other dealers and private owners. We are often told by a seller, “My Jeep is excellent and needs nothing.” And while that may be entirely sincere, after doing this for as long as we have, we know better than to expect a 30-plus-year-old vehicle to arrive without a considerable amount of sorting. Even a lovingly cared-for Grand Wagoneer is an aging automobile, and its mechanical components, seals, electrical systems, finishes, and other details have inevitably experienced the passage of time.

And now, the honest truth about Grand Wagoneers…
Here is perhaps the most honest paragraph you will ever read from a restoration house/dealer: in some ways, these Jeeps were difficult automobiles even when they were new.
Sometimes we wonder if automotive engineering was more of a hobby with certain Jeep executives. Consider this: the Grand Wagoneer was the last American-produced vehicle to retain a carburetor. Installing such an antiquated piece of technology on a vehicle that was still being produced into the early 1990s is a perfect illustration of just how primitive these Jeeps could be compared with other vehicles of their era.
That is why we now automatically upgrade and modernize every Grand Wagoneer we restore with modern fuel injection, eliminating the troublesome carburetor—and, with it, the need for the next owner to repeatedly visit his local Jeep service advisor asking him to coax the thing back into proper adjustment.
But in many other respects, we cannot simply rewrite the way these vehicles were engineered and manufactured. We are, to some degree, always working within the limitations of the original factory design. Outdated technology, old-fashioned manufacturing methods, complicated vacuum systems, primitive electrical architecture, and other quirks are simply part of the Grand Wagoneer story.
Did you know that you can remove the grille from a final-year 1991 Grand Wagoneer and still see, behind it, the round openings designed for the headlights used on the original 1963 Wagoneer? That is just one small example of how much of the original architecture remained with these vehicles through the years.
So please understand what you are buying. Even a beautifully restored Grand Wagoneer will require more maintenance and periodic servicing than a modern automobile. That is simply the truth, fellow enthusiast. These are vintage vehicles, and they should be treated as such.
If you require the completely trouble-free, appliance-like ownership experience of a modern automobile, we would candidly suggest that a vintage Grand Wagoneer may not be for you.
But if you can accept the occasional quirk, the need for maintenance, and the responsibility that comes with owning an old automobile, there is very little else quite like a Grand Wagoneer. In fact, much of what makes them so desirable today—the old-school engineering, commanding presence, unmistakable styling, and wonderfully dated character—is precisely what makes them so much fun to own.
