1986 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Grand Wagoneer by Classic Gentleman, internationally recognized as a leading buyer, restorer and seller of low mile excellent condition Grand Wagoneers, presents this 93,250 low mile 1986 Charcoal Grand Wagoneer. She is a Classic Gentleman alumni that has been both mechanically modernized and cosmetically restored.

Our Grand carries a accident free Carfax that reveals the low 93,250 miles are original, with all but a few of those miles used in the road salt free states of Colorado and Georgia. (She has been a Northeast exclusive summer ride for just the last couple of years). Therefore, we have a very healthy frame and undercarriage thanks to her sunny south history and averaging only 2,500 miles per year!

Our restoration works listed below were all completed in the summer of 2020 and she was enclosed shipped to our Nantucket summer resident buyer where he enjoyed her immensely, but given its a small island, added just 2,000 additional miles to the odometer. (All the while keeping her protectively garaged when not in use). Our client is typical of many of our buyers who like variation in their car/boat/plane experiences and so this Grand has been enclosed shipped back to us and has re-entered our available inventory.

We applied the beautiful factory original paint color, Charcoal Metallic, to this lovely gem and she is gorgeous. The exterior wood trim and new wood siding are from Team Grand Wagoneer and they look wonderful mixing with the Charcoal Metallic. Likewise the wheels were professionally re-done, highlighting the factory original gold color inserts. A new windshield was also installed. As a special bonus, this Grand received a new front grille frame back in 2020 and since those are no longer produced, a real plus to this Wagoneer. The remaining exterior chrome and aluminum bits, including the bumpers, center wheel caps, door handles, luggage rack and so on, whilst not new, exhibit low mile, road salt free usage and still present in very good condition.

The rich honey colored interior restoration in 2020 included new carpeting on all the floor surfaces and the cargo area sides and inner tailgate. Just the factory original carpet remains on the seat backs and lower door panels, which are areas that receive next to no wear over the years. Custom floor mats are also included. The leather portion of the seats were re-coated and a new headliner fitted. We also installed new seat belts for both safety and appearance. The interior appointments include power mirrors, power seats, power windows, power door locks, AM/FM/CD/Bluetooth/Satellite stereo, and of course the heat and air conditioning (which has been updated to R 134 along with a new a/c compressor being installed).

The newly re-manufactured engine is the factory correct spec 360ci V8 motor. The professional re-manufacturing process is comprehensive and is listed further down in this write up description. The transmission has been serviced and “shift on the fly” 4 wheel drive is ready for any environment. So, you have a newly re-manufactured engine and a ready transmission along with the important modern upgrade, ditching the factor carburetor and modernizing this sled with fuel injection.

We installed new rear leaf springs so her ride will be as comfortable as a Grand Wagoneer should be.

Sometimes we wonder if automotive engineering was more of a hobby with Jeep executives. For example, a Grand Wagoneer was the very last vehicle produced in America still fitted with a carburetor. The factory installing an ancient artifact like a carburetor to these Grands is a perfect example of Wagoneers being more primitive than other vehicles of the same model years. Now we automatically upgrade and modernize each of our Grands with MODERN FUEL INJECTION, eliminating the troublesome carburetor and therefore also eliminating the next owner having to constantly hector his local Jeep service advisor to adjust the carburetor. But, in most every other way, we can’t change the method these were built by the factory. In many respects the manufacturer used outdated technology and manufacturing methods and as a restorer, we will always be compromised by that circumstance. Did you know you can remove the front grill from a final year 1991 Grand Wagoneer and behind it still see the round cut out holes for the 1963 Jeep Wagoneer headlights? Those are just two examples above to illuminate the discussion. Therefore, please understand you will do more maintenance and servicing of a vintage Grand Wagoneer than a modern piece, even one we have restored. That is just a truth, fellow enthusiast. If you don’t have the un-excitability and tolerance for that, then let us say to you candidly, don’t buy one. But let us also remind you that it is indeed that old school style and looks of a Grand Wagoneer that have made them so ever popular today.
