Grand Wagoneer by Classic Gentleman, internationally recognized as a leading buyer, restorer and seller of low mile excellent condition Grand Wagoneers, presents a exceptional returning Classic Gentleman alumni. This Deep Night Blue was a one family owner, road salt free from Washington State, low mile cherished heirloom classic from the families original new purchase in 1987 into 2017. A 30 year long ownership legacy til sold to us in 2017…Almost unheard of in this day and age. Carfax confirms the low miles and road salt free state history so the frame and undercarriage are strong. With her present 101,700 miles, she has travelled on average, only 3,000 miles per year.

We cosmetically restored her just 3 short years/1,500 miles ago for our client who garaged her at his Hilton Head vacation home. Our patron couldn’t get down there enough to enjoy the Grand and so rang us up and we reacquired her. We decided to treat her to some additional cosmetic refurbishment along with a major mechanical updating. She has been mechanically restored with a newly remanufactured factory stock style specification 360ci V8 motor and updated with modern fuel injection.

A curious artifact of the old AMC ownership of Jeep (Remember AMC officially handed over the reins of Jeep to Chrysler in 1987),is this extremely cool factory dark blue padded vinyl top. Padded vinyl roofs were offered by Jeep for just a brief period and very very few of them remain in existence. Now we all know that something can be rare, and not in a good way, but that is certainly not the case with a Grand Wagoneer factory padded roof. We paid a premium to get this one because when the original owners picked this option, they chose to go the understated way by choosing the factory Dark Blue coloring of the vinyl top. That color is so close to the Deep Night Blue paint color itself, it is a very soft and subtle, yet elegant option. As my family back in England would say, “it’s supermarine, old boy!” This original vinyl roof remains in very good condition showing only the slightest wear and ageing. She was as “churched up” and probably the most expensively optioned Grand Wagoneer your could special order in 1987.

We just applied the Deep Night Blue paint 1,500 miles ago and she has polished up to a splendid form. The buyer’s popular color prejudice for Grand Wagoneers runs in favor of either shades of blue or dark green and so this one is a perfect candidate to have restoration monies invested in her. The way the blue works against the wood siding and tan color interior, blends naturally into a vintage Wagoneer look. We just installed that rich wood siding, fitting it inside and bordered by the original factory wood trim. That original wood trim isn’t brand new like the wood siding sticker inside of it but remains in very good condition and is reflective of low mile usage and wear. Many collectors value keeping the original factory trim in place, with it’s factory peg holes and wood grain look, and for that reason, we keep it when we can. The front grill frame was new 1500 miles ago, just like the refinished wheels and whitewall tires. In just the last year they have ceased making new grill frames for these Wagoneers so it is a great find to have a relatively fresh grill frame like this one. The remaining exterior items like the center wheel caps, bumpers, door handles and trim chrome bits, likewise display just low mile usage and ageing.

The cabin is finished in the popular Tan color and is in beautiful condition. The seats have been refreshed and are in great form, just as the images portray. All of the floor carpeting is brand new and freshly fitted. New Grand Wagoneer custom floor mats are also included to protect the carpeting. The luxury appointments inside include power windows, power seats, power door locks, power mirrors, the original AM/FM/Cassette stereo, tilt steering wheel along with air conditioning. The glass panel in the roof lets the sunshine in or, you can pull the interior headliner door over the glass to darken the mood.

The mechanical upgrading, updated and restoration investment is a lengthy one for this special piece.

Firstly, we are installing a professionally re-manufactured factory correct 360ci V8 motor which includes the following highlights.

  • Installed precision milled cylinder heads
  • Installed Valve train: new valves (stainless exhaust & plated intake valves), new valve seals, new valve seating
  • Leak tested Heads & Block
  • New Main Bearings
  • New Oil Pump
  • New Pistons
  • New Rod Bearings
  • New Seals & Gaskets
  • New Timing Chain
  • New Hydraulic Flat Tappet Lifters

Now back in the late 80’s Chrysler was too occupied narrowing their losses into bankruptcy to spend monies upgrading the Grand Wagoneer so they achieved the dubious feat of making the Grand Wagoneer the last passenger vehicle made in America that still had a carburetor. Well, when it comes to reliability, that is a huge stone to leave unturned and so you will find our example here updated and upgraded to modern fuel injection.

Some highlights of that advancement include:

  • Throttle body with mounting plate
  • Electric fuel pump
  • Inline fuel filter with hoses
  • Inline fuel pump
  • New engine harness with OBDII date connector
  • OBDII scan code reader to plug into harness
  • New oxygen sensor
  • Electronic ignition module
  • Electronic speed sensor to replace speedo cable
  • 8MM high performance ignition wire set
  • Premium distributor cap & rotor
  • New spark plugs
  • Accel chrome ignition coil

Other mechanical works include a complete new exhaust, starter and alternator, replaced front brake pads and rear brake shoes, new rear leaf springs installed and new shocks, along with a transmission fluid and filter change with new seals, and so on. The 4 wheel drive system is fully serviced, both 4 wheel high and 4 wheel low are ready to hit the trail.
