1990 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Grand Wagoneer by Classic Gentleman, internationally recognized as a leading buyer, restorer and seller of low mile, excellent condition Grand Wagoneers, presents this handsome Charcoal Grey Metallic. She is a returning Classic Gentleman alumni. 

Whilst we have been restoring and selling Grands for decades, we only began our full frame off restorations with newly remanufactured engine, rebuilt transmission, reupholstered seating and much more, during the 2022 year and thereafter. This example was restored prior to those protocols so her works, whilst not as extensive as our currently finishing offerings, were still exceedingly considerable.

This piece has led a charmed life with a long-term owner for over 25 years. She was purchased new in the southern state of Georgia and eventually was shipped to the original owner’s vacation home in Telluride, Colorado. After her time in Colorado, we purchased her and carried out a restoration. We sold our Charcoal Gray back in 2020 to a gentleman who had a vacation home in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Our past customer returned to his vacation home less and less and only added 1,500 miles total to her, post our restoration.  She has never seen a penny of road salt and down to that happy circumstance, has a strong frame underneath her. Take a close look at those undercarriage images- She is as beautiful underneath as above. Carfax confirms no accidents ever reported and the low miles of 90,050 are original.

The Charcoal Grey Metallic is a professional color conversion we commissioned back in 2020 and looks brilliant. We stripped away the old exterior black finish and then the exterior metal surfaces were redone in the Charcoal Gray along with the engine bay, all the interior door jams and all the exposed required to match interior metal surfaces. We likewise replaced the wood trim and wood siding at the same time. The wheels, wheel caps and remaining exterior chrome and aluminum bits whilst not new are still in very good condition and suit the Grand well. The 5 whitewall tires are brand new, just fitted, balanced and aligned.

The cordovan interior is excellent condition as this shade wears well over time. We chose the Charcoal Gray Metallic exterior specifically because it looks so smart against the Cordovan interior. The leather portion of the seats have been resurfaced and a new headliner has just been installed by our upholstery team. The balance of the cabin remains in as lovely a condition as the images portray. The cabin is loaded with options including power seats, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, modern stereo and the all-important air conditioning.

This Grand has the significant upgrade of fuel injection fitted to her, replacing the factory stock carburetor. No more pumping the gas pedal needed to fire up the ignition. Along with the addition of fuel injection, Classic Gentleman organized a whole host of service and maintenance from all new leaf springs underpinning the suspension on up through servicing the engine, transmission, 4 wheel drive system and electrical systems.

Still, and here is the most honest paragraph you have perhaps ever seen from a restoration house/dealer, in some ways these Jeeps were terrible even when they were new. Sometimes we wonder if automotive engineering was more of a hobby with Jeep executives. For example, a Grand Wagoneer was the very last vehicle produced in America still fitted with a carburetor. The factory installing an ancient artifact like a carburetor to these Grands is a perfect example of Wagoneers being more primitive than other vehicles of the same model years. Now we automatically upgrade and modernize each of our Grands with MODERN FUEL INJECTION, eliminating the troublesome carburetor and therefore also eliminating the next owner having to constantly hector his local Jeep service advisor to adjust the carburetor. But, in most every other way, we can’t change the method these were built by the factory. In many respects the manufacturer used outdated technology and manufacturing methods and as a restorer, we will always be compromised by that circumstance. Did you know you can remove the front grill from a final year 1991 Grand Wagoneer and behind it still see the round cut out holes for the 1963 Jeep Wagoneer headlights? Those are just two examples above to illuminate the discussion. Therefore, please understand you will do more maintenance and servicing of a vintage Grand Wagoneer than a modern piece, even one we have restored. That is just a truth, fellow enthusiast. If you don’t have the un-excitability and tolerance for that, then let us say to you candidly, don’t buy one. But let us also remind you that it is indeed that old school style and looks of a Grand Wagoneer that have made them so ever popular today.
